The aim of this chapter has been to prepare both you and your computer for the installation of Ubuntu. You ve looked at how your hard disk will be partitioned prior to installation and the preparations you should make to ensure that your hard disk has sufficient free space. You also learned about the types of files you might choose to back up, in addition to vital details you should record, such as usernames and passwords for your online accounts. In the next chapter, we move on to a full description of the Ubuntu installation procedure. The chapter guides you through getting Ubuntu onto your computer.

The files that are created on your server really depend on the services that are installed. Here s a list of some of the important ones: apache2: This subdirectory contains the access log and error log for your Apache web server. auth.log: Here you ll find a list of authentication events. Typically, you ll see when user root has authenticated to the server. dmesg: This file has a list of messages generated by the kernel. Typically, it s quite helpful when analyzing what has happened at the kernel level when booting your server. faillog: This is a binary file that contains messages about login failures that have occurred. Use the faillog command to check its contents. mail.*: These files contain information on what happened on the mail service that may be running at your server. These logs can become quite big if your server is a mail server because all mail activity will be logged by default. udev: In this file you can see all the events that have been generated by the hardware plug-and-play manager udev (see 6 for more information about this). The information in this file can be very useful when troubleshooting hardware problems.

It s now time to install Ubuntu. In the dim and distant past, installation was sometimes difficult, but the developers now have it down to a fine art, so it should take only 30 minutes or so on a modern PC. It s also relatively simple, with very few decisions to make throughout, and lots of hand-holding. However, you should examine all the options you re offered to make sure they re correct. Installing an operating system involves a couple of serious processes that have the potential for data loss. Read and consider every warning message you see, and be sure to keep your wits about you. Above all, make a backup of your data beforehand, as described in the previous chapter.

Although the table in Figure 3-7 and the corresponding view in Listing 3-11 are both useful, they contain more information than our original question required. We can take the result of our view and use select and project operations to retrieve a subset of rows and columns as we did in 2. We are interested in only some of the rows so we need a select operation with the condition TourType = 'Open' AND Year = 2006. To install an application, first you need to find it This is made easy by the Center s browsing and searching mechanisms, and by the fact that Ubuntu maintains all applications in a catalog containing information about the applications available from all configured software sources This catalog is a hierarchical structure organized into departments and sometimes sublevels under them, and is made available in the main pane when you select Get Software in the navigation pane Each department groups applications with a common objective, and its name is self-explanatory; for example the Games department has games like Mines, and the Office department has applications used mostly at the office, like OpenOfficeorg Word Processor (commonly known as Writer) So, just select the department you feel is most likely to have the application you are looking for.

Many processes are configured to work with syslog, but some important services have their own log configuration. For example, the Apache web server handles logging itself by specifying the names of the files that information has to be logged to in the Apache configuration files. And many other similar services don t use syslog, so, as an administrator, you always have to take a careful look at how logging is handled for each specific service.
