carriage return sign at the end of the line is not interpreted and is used only to make sure that you don't type two separated lines. I've used the \ for typographical reasons only. In a real script, you d just put all code on one line (which wouldn t fit on these pages without breaking it, as I ve had to do). I'll use this convention in some later scripts as well.

Creating a new scheduled task is easy with GNOME Scheduler. One of the most common types of scheduled tasks is the recurring task. This is a command or program that you want to run on a periodic basis for example, the cleaning of certain folders or your system s backup. You don t want to run those tasks just once, but to configure them and be at ease because you know they re running without your intervention.

Understanding what the example script from Listing 7-24 does, it is not really hard to understand the script in Listing 7-25 because it does the same thing. However, you should be aware of a few things. First, I ve added a [ -z $1 ] test to give an error if $1 is not defined. Next, the example in Listing 7-25 is all on one line. This makes the script more compact, but it also makes it a little harder to understand what is going on. I ve used brackets to increase the readability a little bit and also to keep the different parts of the script together. The parts between brackets are the main tests, and within these main tests some smaller tests are used as well. Let s have a look at some other examples with if ... then ... else. Consider the following line for example: rsync -vaze ssh --delete /srv/ftp 10.0.0.20:/srv/ftp || echo "rsync failed" | mail admin@mydomain.com

The emphasis in this book is on getting accurate information out of a database, but the data has to get in somehow. Most database application developers will provide user-friendly interfaces for inserting data into the various tables. Often a form is presented to the user for entering data that may end up in several tables. Figure 1-4 shows a simple Microsoft Access form that allows a user to enter and amend data in the Member table. It is also possible to construct web forms or mechanical readers (such as the bar-code readers at supermarkets) that collect data and insert it into a database. Behind all the different interfaces for updating data, SQL update queries are generated. I will show you three types of queries for inserting or changing data just so you get an idea of what they look like. I think you will find them quite easy to understand.

Say you re working in an office and want to connect to a central file server. To do this under Linux, you must mount the files that the server offers, making it a part of the Ubuntu file system. We discuss how this is done in the Mounting section later in this chapter.

Depending on what you re looking for, vgdisplay gives useful information. For example, if you were thinking about creating another logical volume, you would first have to be sure that some physical extents (the building blocks of both vg and lv) are available. As you can see in the example in Listing 4-11, this is not the case, so you have to add a physical volume first before you can proceed.

Note Bear in mind that, in most cases, Ubuntu takes care of mounting automatically, as discussed later in this

chapter. For example, when you try to connect to a shared folder by clicking Places automatically handles the mounting of the shared folder. Network Servers, Ubuntu
